Aldeburgh beach

Unforgiving sea,
Stirred  by operatic ghosts,
Attracts and repels.

Went over to Aldeburgh today.   A place with a bit of a split identity, partly seaside and fishing town and partly cultural centre (including the nearby Snape Maltings).  Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears famously lived here, and Britten wrote many of his major works here. We visited the Red House where they lived and stood slightly awestruck in the studio where he wrote War Requiem.

For Britten's centenary there was a performance of Peter Grimes, staged on the beach here .... a truly tragic tale, it's hard to look at this beach without thinking of it.

Stepping over the sea wall onto the beach we were blasted with the wind across the North sea .....

By the way if you fancy living in the tower in the picture, it is on the market for a mere £1.2million (!!!)... although I have to say it looks in a right state, so you would need a lot more than that to make it habitable ...

a bit of Peter Grimes

Am having a catch up so will be posting a few pictures at once ... this one will probably disappear!
