Mackintosh Newel Post

This afternoon I had the opportunity to view the former Conservative Club in Helensburgh, which is currently listed for sale.

Like the exterior, much of the interior detailing is unusual enough to suggest that Charles Rennie Mackintosh contributed much to its design. The wonderful top-lit Billiards Room and Function Room has similarities to the Hall at Queen's Cross Church and the Museum space at the Glasgow School of Art. On the stairs, the top of the panelled dado follows a series of elegant curves at the half landing.

This is a detail of the stairs with the wonderfully organic newel post.

Just back from an excellent talk by Andy Scott at Mackintosh Queen's Cross.
