A concrete love affair

GCR south of Helmdon

Just south of the Northamptonshire village of Helmdon is this deep cutting. Excavated for the Great Central Railway line, it saw 60 years of service before the Beeching axe. Its worth getting out to places like this if only to behold in the sheer engineering robustness these structure embody. I like to imagine what the lines might have looked like in their heyday, we've left the finest work of a generation left to the elements.
