I took a couple of dozen shots of this solitary cormorant as it twisted its anglepoise neck in a ceaseless gyration,

Most people probably know that these birds have long been used for fishing in China and Japan, now mainly for the entertainment of tourists. Some terrific images of it here.  Is it exploitative? As with all human-animal relationships it's all too easy to project our own concerns with the natural and to forget that the wild is never a safe place in which to exist. We can't be sure that captivity doesn't offer some advantages.
