Yes, indeed it is.
This is, in fact a globe artichoke that has been left to flower.
I learned today that the globe artichoke is actually a variety of a species of thistle cultivated as a food.
They are quite pretty as flowers.
I did snap a conventional thistle too in the extra photo.
