Western Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly

(Papilio rutulus)  Native to Western N.A. from British Columbia south along the coast.


This one is enjoying the nectar from our Lantana.


Note: The notch out of his bottom left wing.  Birds will try and eat butterflies while they are in flight.  This one managed to escape with only a small bite out of its wing.
