Guess the object!

Dorsetb picked up this interesting object today at the Peterborough antiques fair....

Does anyone want to hazard a guess what it is?

( oh and we saw bargain hunt being filmed, dorsetb wanted to walk behind the cameras to try and get on film, but as he was dripping ice cream on his shirt and had it in his beard, I wouldn't let him!
