Oak Planting

Got to Saxon Hall, Hereford, OK on the bike, nice ride with dull but dry weather so no glare. Only shower I had was when a twit in a BMW Z4 decided he really, really, needed his windscreen washed A LOT! I got covered in the resulting spray.
Peter Cocks, the organiser, and Aubrey Oliver, the horticultural expert, were already on hand digging the hole. Needed a pick axe as well as a shovel because of all the stones. Apparently, when it was the SAS base, the ground had been covered in large pebbles and then just covered over with soil and turf when 'The Regiment' moved to Credenhill in Hereford.

I had the honour, and the easier job, of putting the soil back into the hole after Aubrey had placed the sapling on a bed of peat and given it a good water.

I will go back every few years to see how it's progressing but it's been outside permanently since I pushed the acorn into a pot of peat 5 years ago so it's certainly hardy enough.

I think everyone is bored with the story so in the extra photo's is the sapling with the 200 year old stump of the old oak in the background.
