RW's Daily Exposures

Burrowing Owl

Shot from an extreme distance.  On the left is the field camera that is motion and heat activated.  The owl is standing near its habitat, a simple burrow or hole in the ground.  This is where they sleep and cover to protect themselves from predators. The burrow is also used for breeding and raising chicks.

Our local Audubon chapter along with another half dozen groups including fish and game, city and nonprofits, have been monitoring these owls for over a decade.  They are mostly affected by loss of habitat - development and bad agricultural practices, among other disturbances.

They are declining in numbers in the Santa Clara Valley by disturbing percentages.  They deserve to become listed as endangered so preservation practices can be made law.  Without being listed, these birds will certainly be gone in our area, which was abundant with these amazing birds 30 years ago.
