Because the Kent & East Sussex railway doesn't have a turntable or turning triangle the engines will forever face the same way unless lifted by a crane or something equally tricky (I'm thinking now about being pulled onto a trailer which is then turned around..). You get the point - it's not an everyday occurrence to make an engine face the other way. Thus we see sights like this - the engine is running backwards out of Tenterden pulling the train to Bodiam. The reason that it's going backwards here is that when it returns to Tenterden and climbs the bank the water in the boiler is brought over the fire.

Lovely autumnal day but my foot is still sore so not much walking. No big deal though because Ireland Vs France has just started...........
