Between fen and mountains

Above Mosset

Today a few of us walked above Mosset.  We were is mist and clouds most of the morning but the sun did come out briefly.  We saw some magnificent pyracanthas as well as few attractive mushrooms and a stuffed stoat.  On the way back we passed La Coûme which is a famous rural education centre set up in 1933 by a Jewish teacher and his wife fleeing Nazi Germany with the help of English Quakers.  It welcomed child refugees, mostly orphans, from the Spanish Civil war and it continues to this day as a progressive outdoor education centre.  Denis Healey spent some time there and said he was 'moved to tears' by the experience.  The fascinating story of La Coûme can be found here
