Driver G Taylor, 13 Signal Company Royal Engineers

Bearsted is marking the centenary of the Great War by placing wreaths of men who died in the War at or near their home in the village on or around the date they were killed.

Driver G Taylor died in Gallipoli but the actual date is not recorded but it must have been October 1915 as the ill fated Gallipoli Campaign began in April 1915. He lived in Mount Cottages (the houses in the background), we've passed this house many times on our walks and on our way to the allotment.

Whilst out later this afternoon we came across another wreath on Church Lane that had only been laid today, commemorating a soldier who died on 13th October 1915. I'll probably post that wreath at another date.

My dad made holly wreaths for Christmas and for Remembrance Sunday. He used a circular frame, packed it with moss using wire stubs to hold it in place. He then pushed sprigs of holly and berries and poppies into the moss. It's a pity I don't have any shots (to my knowledge) of one of those wreaths.

The little stubs of wire were about 7 or 8 inches long, very soft and very useful. Many a time I've used one to repair something where a screw or bolt has fallen out - usually the mudgard on a bike.
