Slapton Sands

On the second day of our camping trip we left it too late to book into a campsite so we ended up in a car park.  This was no ordinary car park though.  It directly faced Slapton Sands and we had the place to ourselves.  Slapton Sands has a  tragic history in that it was the place of the death of over 900 American soldiers during the second world war.  They were practising for the D Day landings but were spotted by German U boats who launched an attack that caught everyone by surprise.  The incident was hushed up and no-one really knows why so many lost their lives.  There were even reports of British troops firing on the survivors as they tried fleeing from the carnage.
