Historic Trail

It’s easy to find your way round the historic places in Romsey, thanks to the local preservation society which has clearly marked the interesting sites with plaques like this.
This one on the Georgian facade of the town centre hotel, the White Horse gives a taste of its historic origins back to the 14th century, accompanied by a tempter to see what’s inside.
It’s not the only inn with history in the region, but Silks’ White Horse easily holds the record of being the oldest in the town, boasting 600 years of history as a coaching inn.
The plaque gives a clue to the fact that even now, designs and paintings on internal walls and beams have been discovered that date from the 1500s and 1600s. Tudor motifs and roses can still be seen in parts of the hotel.
We’ve visited the hotel before with our Blipfoto camera and I think it is always delightful to come back, because it has one foot firmly in the present day ready to fulfill all the expectations of a modern boutique hotel with an award winning brasserie, while retaining a hold on the character of the past within a Grade 11 listed building with individually styled rooms, some with original period features.
