Big napper, Napoli

In the wake of last night’s storm, the morning is pretty overcast – but we decide to head for Vesuvius anyway.

By the time the Circumvesuviano train gets to Pompei though, the rain is torrential. As it shows no sign of stopping, we decide a visit to the museum in Naples would be a better option.

This, of course, does nothing to allay Matt’s fear that he’ll never get to Vesuvius.

Have an excellent pizza in the square outside Naples station, as – of course – the weather has cleared up. We’re keen to see the artefacts from Pompei, which are incredibly well preserved – and, as Mo points out, many of the objects wouldn't look out of place in a modern kitchen.

There are also gigantic Roman heads, like this epic feller.
