Sailing on dry land

Our final chance to get to the volcano across the bay, and the day gets off to a rainy start – though it’s all over by the time we've finished breakfast.

At Pompei we get the bus. This winds its way through the national park, climbing higher and higher on the narrow roads, where the driver demonstrates some impressive horn-tooting skills.

On the side of the bus, a sign reads Pompei Ruins - Vesuvius. “Funny,” says Matt, “I thought it was the other way round.”

From Matt's mountain goat antics, I think he's pleased to have finally got there.

When we get back to Sorrento, we go for a meal at the restaurant where we went for George’s birthday four years ago. It’s every bit as excellent as we remember, and it’s a great end to the holiday.
