Lathyrus Odoratus

Ochre Brittlegill

I do like it when a plan works. Following yesterday's blip of the Fragile Brittlegill with its pink-violet cap I thought it would be nice to find another colourful member of the russula family. I set off with the spaniel hoping to find the Ochre Brittlegill (Russula ochroleuca) with its distinctive yellow cap and white gills and we struck lucky within half an hour. Alas all the ones we found had damaged caps but a couple of hours later, towards the end of our morning walk, we found this intact specimen (complete with chocolate sprinkles on top).  Its very similar in appearance to the Yellow Swamp Brittlegill but is, in contrast,  usually found in the dry, well-drained, areas of broadleaf and conifer woodlands.
