#TastyTeam tackles #obesity in #WestSussex

According to the most recent figures from the National Child Measurement Programme, an average of 9.5% of 4-5 year olds and 19.1% of 10-11-year olds are obese in England today, and almost half of adults are now classed as overweight or obese – leading to a range of health problems including diabetes, heart disease and strokes.

England has one of the highest obesity rates in Europe, with people eating up to three times as much sugar as is recommended, and teenagers the biggest consumers.

In response to this national crisis, Brighton’s city council has taken on a pro-active initiative and launched a voluntary ‘sugar tax’ for all shops and food outlets.  Backed by celebrity chef and nutrition campaigner Jamie Oliver, Brighton’s city council is calling on shops to voluntarily add 10p levy to sugary soft drinks as part of campaign to drive down sugar consumption and cut diet-related diseases. Brighton is also aiming to bring food education studies into every primary school.

IMPACT’s own Tasty Team has been tackling this crisis throughout West Sussex since the launch of their Healthy Eating Programme over a decade ago.  ‘Tasty Sessions’ in primary schools teach the next generation about how what they eat affects how they feel, and ‘Get Cooking’ courses with vulnerable adults and families teach households practical cooking skills and nutritional knowledge.
