Remains of the day

This is all that's left of Seafield Colliery in Kirkcaldy. Started in 1954 and opened in 1960 it was one of the largest undersea mines in Europe.

There were three main tunnels running under the river Forth, the deepest of them being 1000 metres below the surface. Water continuously seeped into the tunnels and, of course, it had to be continuously pumped clear. There were two shafts each 600 metres deep. One of them used to bring up the coal, and the other to transport supports and other materials as well as the miners themselves. Tragically on the 10 May 1973, five miners were killed when a roof collapsed.

Despite it being said that it had a life of 150 years, with reserves of 60 million tons of coal, Seafield Colliery was closed in 1988. In September 1989, its twin towers were demolished and a housing estate now sits on the site of the colliery.
