A gift

We went to Aachen for some Sealskinz socks for Bert and to visit the Aachen cathedral and its treasure chamber. The cathedral is worth a visit. Especially the Carolingian octagon in the centre of the building.
In the treasure chamber relics from a distant past. Bones of bishops and of Charles the Great in golden reliquaries. What impressed me was the lengths of a bone of, according to the explanation, Charles the Great. It must have been a person of at least two metres tall. And finally a scarf which once belonged to, again according to the explanation, Christ.
The crown was a gift from Margaret of York (1446-1503) to the statue of the holy Mary. During the Middle Ages the cathedral was known as the Royal Church of St. Mary at Aachen.
