Frida y Diego

Woke up in New Jersey to some unusually warm and humid weather - perfect for a visit to the New York Botanical Gardens, just a short drive away in the Bronx.

As luck would have it, the NYBG was offering a magnificent exhibit showcasing Frida Kahlo's lifelong appreciation for the botanical world, as evidenced by her frequent use of plant imagery in her paintings, and her studio and garden at Casa Azul in Mexico City - re-imagined in this exhibit by the NYBG!

This must-see exhibit featured several of Kahlo's pencil and paper sketches as well as several of her paintings. A highpoint of the show was this ofrenda - an altar decorated with traditional Mexican art and imagery, flowers, sugar skulls - created in homage to Kahlo for Dia de los Muertos. Above, artist Andrea Arroyo (center) discusses her continuing additions to the ofrenda with NYBG directors.
