Red Squirrel

Another illustration from the charming little book I bought in Yorkshire at Hardcastle Crags. The book is "The Country Set" by Hannah Dale and this is what she has to say about these dear little critters:

"The iconic red squirrel, with its copper pelt and tufty ears, is a much-loved British native.  The familiar bushy tail is used for balance and steering while jumping from tree to tree and is also thought to keep them warm at night.  The name 'squirrel' even comes from the Greek for 'shade-tailed'.  In addition to their treetop acrobatics, Red squirrels are also excellent swimmers.  They are famed for burying caches of nuts and seeds for the lean winter months, but their memory is not as good as that of grey squirrels, and they often forget where they have buried their stash.  Most of Britain's red squirrels are now found in Scotland".

That last sentence made me smile and wonder if they forgot how to get back home.

I know this is a stretch, but I think it qualifies for Squirrel Blip Friday -- barely.  It was dark when I got home tonight so blip options were scarce but  the good news is that after six weeks, our trial is finally over and the results were very positive so even though we're all worn out, it was a nice day.  And what better way to end it than with a squirrel.
