The Long Walk

Not to be put off by a little rain ...
We left the lovely Arco today and drove off east to a route that Mr KT and I had done many years ago. Somehow we had forgotten that the drive up to the start of the route is almost as tough as the walk itself! But it was spectacular - a road winding up and round the mountain sides, getting ever narrower!
We intending attempting another via ferrata along a long ridge but the weather was grim so we took the better option of a long walk which followed the same ridge. Not any old walk though. This was the Strada delle 52 Gallerie - the path with 52 tunnels! Its another construction from the first world war where troops made their way up and down the mountains with a huge camp base at 2000m. Since we last visited there have been some information boards provided along the route. The english bit of these tended to be a couple of lines which told us to expect more spectacular views, and more tunnels ahead. Sadly the cloud was so low that views were rare, but the tunnels were very much in evidence - the longest being 300m (with only an iPhone between us for light!). The teenager tuned in to Lord of the Rings on the iPod to keep him going (his usual listening of choice when out on the hills), he kept us informed of Frodo's progress and we immersed ourselves in Middle Earth/WW1 battle grounds.
The highest point of the route was a refugio which surprisingly was open. So we popped in to use the facilities, sign their book and the teenager logged on to the wifi! If we'd had any Euro between us so could probably have got a latte. Its amazing what you find up on these mountains!
