Between fen and mountains

St Martin de Canigou

We walked up to the abbey of St Martin today as a final activity before Mrs TT and our friends return to the UK tomorrow.  As we walked up the steep path, I thought it was beginning to rain but it was just the sound of the leaves fluttering from the trees.  The 11th century  Benedictine abbey of Saint-Martin dominates the valley below, perched high on a rocky outcrop. It is a remarkable edifice with its Lombard bell tower, marble capitals, and vaulted ceilings in the crypt and the abbey, all fine examples of early Romanesque art in the region.
Lovingly restored in the 20th century, the abbey has been under the jurisdiction of the Catholic Beatitudes Community since 1988.
