Medieval gate tower

We returned to Devon from Shrewsbury via the scenic route.

This involved travelling through Hereford, Monmouth and the River Wye valley to Chepstow.  The sun appeared later in the day and we thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent autumnal colours of the trees en route.  What was most stunning was coming across the Tintern Abbey surrounded by tree clad hills.  It would have been great to have stopped for photos but we only spared a few minutes.  Must make a note to return here.

This photo shows the gate tower on the Monnow Bridge.  It is the only remaining medieval fortified river bridge in Britain where the gate tower stands actually on the bridge.  The stone bridge was erected around 1270 and the gate tower formed part of the town's defences, see additional photo.
