How to ruin a lovely building with garish lighting

On the way back from dinner with a vendor, I took a snap of Copenhagen's townhall square.

I like to see bright lights in a night shot (the effects can be amazing) but at the same time, I think it should suit the building and not turn it into some vulgar sandwich board.
