Between fen and mountains

Flower pickers

The flower pickers are out in force in the fields of Sweet William. Most of the pickers are eastern European and work for no more than the national minimum wage. Local people are reluctant to take the work because it is so hard. Local employers are reluctant to employ local people because they are less productive and have a poor work ethic compared to the migrant workers. I take my hat off to these workers who work so hard for such little reward and who are diligent and conscientious. I meet many of them at work and have always been impressed with how polite and courteous they are. Unfortunately, I am probably in a minority holding this opinion. In any rural area, people tend to be suspicious of newcomers and resistant to change.
