Roman View Of Autumn

It was suggested that we take a trip on the Border Railway but thought the  weather forecast too poor so we took the car for a tootle round the by-ways of the Borders instead. Autumn colours are out in force, creating carpets of all shades of yellow and brown (extra photo).

We noticed on the map the straight lines of a Roman Road, Dere Street, which crossed several minor roads in the area so stopped to investigate. This section actually fords Oxnam water; one imagines Roman soldiers' enjoyment as they continued their march with cold, wet feet, though a handy footbridge allowed our crossing in comfort. Perhaps the glories of nature provided a welcome distraction.
