Sharm- Security

Artyfartyannie on Blipfoto first alerted us to the fact we are now stranded in Sharm.

For there was no hint last night that anything was amiss when holidaymakers left the hotel for the airport. Nobody knows what happened to them. We do know they did not take off neither did they come back here.

At breakfast the mystery deepened.  British holidaymakers were sitting with their bags packed ready to leave today with no idea whether their flight would take off or not.

Yet in the hotel reception area there was not a hint of anything amiss and our tour representative could not be found. (He did appear later only to say that a further meeting would take place etc.).

Suddenly strangers began to speak to each other.
We shared scraps of information gleaned from text messages, and emails from relatives and friends in the UK. (Internet access is poor) as the enormity of the situation began to sink in.

It’s the Russians I feel sorry for. A group left lunchtime knowing that the UK, KLM and Germany had cancelled all flights in and out of Sharm “ until further notice”.

Suddenly finding yourself in the middle of an international terrorist alert is surreal to say the least.

For us it may mean a few extra days on the beach but the implications for Egypt are enormous.
