One happy refugee

We made it in our kayak to Kastellorizo, not sure if we would be met by wary officials. No problem. As we carried our boat up the slipway we were met by two smiling sailors who said we could leave it on the quay right alongside their navy gunboat where it would be safe! (I guess we don't look like illegal migrants). Migrants there were, however, including this happy man fishing with his young son using improvised poles and string. They now know they have at last passed through the gateway to Europe. As we paddled back to Kas, on leaving Kastellorizo Harbour, we saw evidence of their landfall on the sharp rocks - abandoned tyre innertubes, an orange teeshirt. Out on the open sea you are vulnerable, even in a kayak. These folk probably made their way over after dark, holding onto their innertubes, with only the twinkling lights of Kastellorizo Harbour to guide them. That's courage. Let's hope their hopes of a better life are fulfilled.

Thanks so much for all your kind and sensitive comments on yesterday's blip and the plight of refugees.
