Return of the Squirrel!

I thought we had seen the last of this little fella, not least because of the dogs who appear from time to time in our garden, but no here he appeared this morning busy searching for his bounty of nuts buried a few weeks ago. I would rather have seen a Red Squirrel but that just  wouldn't happen in this location. I used to see plenty of Reds when we lived in Cumbria.  The Grey is native to eastern North America, and was introduced to European regions many years ago. The main factor in the grey squirrel's displacement of the red squirrel is thought to be its greater fitness hence a competitive advantage over the red squirrel on all measures. They tend to be larger and stronger than the red squirrel and has been shown to have a greater ability to store fat for winter.
