Grateful

It might happen
when you’re at an exhibition.

It could start
as you gaze at the art.

It might be over (so quick)
while you’re in a theatre listening to music.

You might be raising
a forkful of the main course to your mouth and anticipating

a dessert you won’t live long enough to taste.
But today, tomorrow, the next day, won’t be our last.

For most of us life will go on with its usual jumble
of the worthwhile and the trivial.

We’ll laugh, praise, get irritated, grumble,
then pause for a moment, and be grateful.
