White Meat, Please

With Thanksgiving here in the U.S. fast approaching...I couldn't resist a blip of this 'gobbler'. The tradition of Roasted Turkey for Thanksgiving supposedly dates back to the first winter that Europeans spent on the coast of what is now New England. As the story goes, they would have surely perished if the Native People had not shared sustenance and taught the colonists how to hunt and grow food in their new home. How these same colonists chose to repay this kindness is another whole story! Anyway...so what better place for a flock of Turkeys to 'hide out' during this time of the year than...Ft. Wilderness, Disney World's Campground 'Resort'! Well...of course! We were on our way out this morning and had to stop for a 'Turkey Jam'. Cars, buses, pedestrians and folks on bikes all stopped, waiting for about 8-10 turkeys to cross the road. So this Noble Bird which, as another story goes, came in a close second place to the Bald Eagle for our National Bird back in the day when those important things were being considered (this may or may not be true, according to which source you use...haha...isn't that just like history though!) I don't know if 'guilt' plays any role in this but modern day U.S. Presidents beginning with George H.W.  Bush began the tradition of the Presidential Turkey Pardon, although there is some evidence that this tradition actually began with Abe Lincoln (freed the slave and the turkeys, apparently!). If you have some time THIS makes interesting reading. And I apologize upfront to all Turkeys reading this, for the inappropriate title!
Wishing you all a Very Wonderful Weekend!
