Derelict wall...

... bordering the rear yards of some terraced houses. A suitable subject for Derelict Sunday.

Many of these nineteenth century walls are still standing but usually with the original structure hidden behind some form of rendering. This particular example appears to show the original construction and doesn't seem to have been ''improved', except for the blocking up of the square openings used for the delivery of coal.

The coalman would have lifted each open hundredweight (51Kg) sack of coal from the truck onto his back and, as he approached the hole in the wall, tipped the contents of the sack over his head into the hole.
