Home straight

Shopping in Epsom today, but I took a detour up to Epsom Downs on the way there. The grandstand and the railings were bright white in the sunshine.

My childhood home was within walking distance of Epsom racecourse and we used to walk there on Derby Day. There was always a vibrant atmosphere, with noisy bookies with their gesticulating tic-tac men and happy punters on open-topped buses. There was a fair and the gypsies had been encamped in the surrounding area in the weeks before, selling their lucky heather from door to door. On the days we didn't go up to the races, we used to stand at the end of the road to watch the cars go by!
