Wooden Bells

We visited the Mission at Ventura today and found these fascinating wooden bells. They sounded by a piece of metal being banged against them - a sound that could be heard all over the Mission grounds and summoned people to pray - or to Spanish lessons - but could not be heard out at sea by pirates who might raid them. Very clever! A nice pretty mission in an interesting area! Thanks M for showing it to me!
