Bullrush

We have a lagoon for the slurry at the bottom of the farmyard.  It was in great demand when we had dairy cows as all their waste - liquid and otherwise - ran down into this pit which had an overflow into another smaller one.  But since the number of livestock is much smaller with the suckler herd the winter waste from the cattle yards is minimum and now we have all manner of plants which have seeded themselves in the fertile "compost".  This creates a haven for various animals,  birds and insects and on occasion I have even seen a fox sniffing about. These bullrush spikes are rather fine, later on they will explode into a pale silky fluffy mass as the seeds are released.  This afternoon there were a bunch of hen pheasants sheltering in the bottom.
