Bottom of the Royal Mile

In front of the Palace of Holyrood House at either the start or the end of the Royal Mile depending on your point of view is Abbey Strand. It is just the small bit of road in front of the entrance gate to the palace and has three buildings in it, this being one of them.
I don't know what this building is used for, if anything. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.
