Stage 1. Remove the Grass

Most of us like the appearance of a green, neatly trimmed lawn. However, maintaining large tracts of manicured lawn presents some problems to native wildlife and the environment. One, regular mowing contributes to noxious gasoline emissions. Second, frequent mowing inhibits the growth of new types of plants, and the birds and insects who like them. That is why we are starting to kill about 2.75 acres of grass on the NHES Campus. This will allow a competition-free environment for our native flowers to grow and will greatly reduce the need for mowing.
