Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

A sad event

This small brass plaque commemorates Peter Kennedy, a local boy, who drowned in 1896 whilst swimming in the Ythan river.
The plaque is mounted on the road bridge where it crosses the Ythan, near to where Peter died.
This is the third bridge to which the plaque has been attached. The first one, an attractive structure made of iron with iron lattice work on both sides, was opened in July 1877. It served the community well until 1926 when it was replaced with a much less attractive bridge made of concrete. This, in turn, was replaced with the present bridge in 1987.
