Dean Road prison, Scarborough

Rare permission to enter a derelict prison this morning. There were a lot of apparent dangers so I had to be careful. The strong morning light was entering the round window above my head and creating patterns on the wall. The prison was built during 1865, opened in 1866 and originally housed 22 males and 22 females, in 36 cells on three floors. It closed in 1878, so, was only open for 12 years. An interesting experience.
The 'folly' of an entrance on Dean road masks the real building behind, which is very 'Victorian' prison like, similar to a 'workhouse', austere and foreboding.
