Berat, Albania Day 2

We had another day to explore Berat, which was needed. We started the day by visiting the Ethnographic Museum, which essentially is a house with original features and furnishings of Albania of old. It was a stunning house with a particularly beautiful open-style living room at the top with seating overlooking the surrounding hills and houses dotted among the golden rock and trees.

We also visited the Mosque, which was particularly beautiful inside. Every town we stayed in in Albania would be filled, periodically, with the sound of the call to prayer. I loved that sound and will miss it now I'm home.

We also visited another Icon Museum and was given a very good talk by an expert (we were so lucky on the tour to have churches and Museums opened just for us and to have such brilliant guides to give us some fascinating information about what we were there to view).

The jam-packed day also included a visit to another church at the top of a steep hill top overlooking the region of Berati, and then a gentle walk along the dusty track.

We ate at a traditional Albanian restaurant and had the most astonishing feast. We were all stuffed! I had my first taste of Raki - and rather liked it. Although some had some ill effects the following day I understand.

I ended the day by taking some pictures on the bridge next to our hotel. The deafening sound of a chorus of frogs croaking filled the air at night. One man on the bridge was trying to catch some (apparently frogs legs are a delicacy in Albania).

Some more photos of Berat.
