Spioenkop

On the next leg if our trip now towards the Zulu battlefield sites and we took a wee detour to Spioenkop. The battle was about this same time of year and it just seems ridiculous that the British thought it was a good idea to march for 5 hours up a hill and 'dig in' just so that the Boers could shoot and bombard them from 7 other surrounding hills while they were lying in the scorching sun. 1,700 went up, 700 got back unscathed; a bad day's work.
Most of the soldiers were from the Lancashire regiments (as in The Kop); this is a shallow trench occupied by them and which became one of their graveyards.
