'Under the Thumb'

This phrase is generally used to describe when someone is, to some extent, being 'controlled' , strangely the origin is said to come from the sport of falconry where to control the bird of prey the 'jesses' or leather thongs around their legs are trapped between the fingers and the thumb, hence to control the bird keep the jesses 'under the thumb' - tomorrow ' flash in the pan'
