To See New Englandly

By distractedhausfrau

Post-Posh

The stripped and shapely
Maple grieves
The ghosts of her
Departed leaves.

The ground is hard,
As hard as stone.
The year is old,
The birds are flown.

And yet the world,
In its distress,
Displays a certain
Loveliness.

- John Updike

Spotted this gate post in one of the toniest neighborhoods of a rather posh town. There was something about it I liked. And I don't mean that in a schadenfreude way!
