O Antiphons

This evening, we were fortunate to be able to attend a most unique and moving performance by Vox Antiqua, a local a cappella vocal ensemble.

From their program notes: "The O Antiphons are comprised of seven prayers that invoke the spirit of the coming Christ, traditionally sung or chanted as meditations during the final days of Advent and culminating on December 23. Each antiphon interprets a different prophecy of the coming Messiah and date from the 8th century. Vox Antiqua mixes these with additional a cappella vocal works that range from the 16th to the 20th century, including Tallis, Byrd, Victoria, Des Pres, Duruflé, Biebl, to create a contemplative and resonant vocal experience."

Inside the church's sanctuary, the lights were off, and the room was lit only by the glow of candles and the warmth of the audience's anticipation. Vox Antiqua's performance was powerful and sensitive, and just what I needed to offset the frenzy that has become the hallmark of what should be a peaceful, reflective time.
