River Aire

We have visited Mary this morning to exchange presents and good wishes for Christmas.  An exciting development for 2016 is that Le Tour Yorkshire will be coming up her road.  I've already suggested scaffolding in the garden but there are certainly several good viewpoints in the local countryside.  On the way home we stopped off at the bridge over the River Aire for this familiar blip.  I have noted before that from this vantage point there are coal-powered power stations in every direction but Kellingley Colliery, the last underground working mine, is only a couple of miles away and ceased production last week.  How much longer will it be before these cooling towers are gone from the horizons around here?  We all want cleaner energy but the loss of the pit has a devastating impact on the miners' families and subsidiary businesses in an area where there is little alternative employment. Let's hope they get the support they deserve.
