Prehistoric Kents Caverns

Today we took the family to Torquay to visit the prehistoric Kents Caverns. Amazing. None of us had ever been before - although that's not strictly true; apparently Mr PP was taken there when he was a pre-school tot, but he can't remember a lot about it.

If ever you're in South Devon, these caves are worth a visit. We were very lucky as our group comprised just us plus one young couple! It meant we saw lots of details that a larger party might miss, such as the skull of a bear and its cub embedded in the 'ceiling' rockface.

The stone drifted aeons ago from the southern hemisphere to our coastline during the shifting of tectonic plates. We saw stalactites and stalagmites - and pillars where some met in the middle and merged into one. Our guide also demonstrated how cave-dwellers would have lit the caves, burning dried moss in scallop shells, creating a much brighter light than a candle, but with a shorter burning time. A fun and interesting experience for Boxing Day.
