Whangapoua Bay, Great Barrier Island

What a day! Too many choices to blip. After driving north up the island, and visiting Port FitzRoy, we paid a visit to the graves of the drowned, of the dreadful sinking of the steamer Wairarapa, when it ran aground on the island, in 1892. Such a peaceful place though and very very beautiful.

We've been surrounded by so many birds too; squabbling tuis (especially at 5am), kingfishers calling all day long, kakas screeching overhead, and rails trying to glean every last scrap of food dropped around the campsite! GBI is a wonderful place to visit!
