I looked around and there they were, gone!!
I called both their names and they came skulking from around the corner. We hadn't been that way so I don't know what attracted them down that little footpath. 
I used the word 'Skulking' after I was reminded of it when Hilaryinoman used the word recently. Good descriptive word :-)
